MMA WELDING SERVICES
Manual arc welding of metal parts and structures according to customer
drawings
PRITZ DEVELOPMENT carries out MMA welding with coated electrodes when manufacturing metal structures,
frames, support components and assemblies from carbon and low-alloy steel.
The process is used to produce strong welded joints, primarily when working with metal of medium to
large thickness. Manual arc welding is particularly effective for structures where access to the
joints is difficult, as well as for selected assembly and repair operations.
Welding work is part of the full PRITZ production cycle: laser cutting, CNC punching, sheet metal bending,
welding, surface preparation, powder coating and assembly of finished products.
Characteristics of the MMA process
Welding process 111, or MMA (Manual Metal Arc), is manual arc welding with a coated electrode.
An electric arc is formed between the coated electrode and the part being welded. The consumable electrode conducts current and supplies filler material to the joint. The high temperature melts the edges of the components being joined and the metal core of the electrode, forming a weld pool.
As it melts, the electrode coating releases shielding gases and forms slag, which protect the molten metal from the surrounding atmosphere. After the welded joint has cooled, the slag is removed mechanically.
The process requires no external shielding gas supply and allows welding in various positions, including where access to the joint area is restricted.
MMA is widely used to weld structural steel, including unalloyed and low-alloy steel. With special electrodes, stainless steel and other materials can also be welded.
Coated electrodes are selected according to the material grade, component thickness, joint type and position, and required mechanical properties of the weld. Electrode selection for welding carbon steel is based on the specific steel grade indicated in the technical documentation.
Rutile electrodes make arc striking and slag removal easier. Basic electrodes are used, among other a pplications, where suitable mechanical properties and high impact toughness of the weld metal are required. Their preparation and storage should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Products for which MMA welding is used
The process is used to manufacture metal structures and assemblies whose main requirements are joint strength, reliability and the ability to weld in areas with difficult access.
Main types of products:
- Frames and load-bearing structures — welded bases, support frames made from steel sections and load-bearing components for industrial equipment.
- Brackets and assemblies — supports, fastening components, connecting plates and reinforced brackets.
- Machine and equipment parts — welded bases, support components and structural assemblies.
- Metal structures made from thick steel plate — reinforced joints, load-bearing components and structures with increased mechanical strength requirements.
- Auxiliary production equipment — process frames, bases, supports and assembly structures.
- Repair and restoration work — restoration of welded joints, removal of isolated defects and repair of metal structures.
MMA is most appropriate for manufacturing individual products, making short welded joints and welding parts whose design features make semi-automatic welding difficult.
Advantages of MMA welding
- Versatility of application. The ability to weld various structural steels using appropriate electrodes.
- Strong welded joints. Following the process requirements ensures the required mechanical properties of the welds.
- No external shielding gas. Gas equipment is not required, simplifying the organization of welding work.
- The ability to weld joints with difficult access. The small size of the electrode holder allows welding in confined spaces.
- Flexibility of use. The process is suitable for one-off production and assembly and repair work.
- Relatively simple equipment. Welding power sources have a relatively simple design and do not require wire feed mechanisms.
Process limitations
When selecting MMA, the following characteristics should be considered:
- Relatively low productivity. The need to replace electrodes periodically and remove slag increases welding time.
- Limitations when welding thin sheets. High heat concentration makes joining thin sheets difficult and increases the risk of burn-through and distortion.
- The need to clean welds. Slag must be removed after welding, and surface cleaning may also be required.
- Dependence of quality on welder skill. Arc stability, weld geometry and joint quality depend largely on the operator’s skills.
- Spatter and welding fume formation. The process generates aerosols and may require additional surface finishing.
- Limited efficiency in series production. For large numbers of identical joints, MIG/MAG usually provides higher productivity.
The choice of welding process depends on the material, part thickness, joint design and requirements for the strength and appearance of the finished product.
MMA welding within the PRITZ production cycle
PRITZ DEVELOPMENT uses manual arc welding to manufacture metal structures and assemblies according to customer drawings and technical documentation.
The process complements MIG/MAG and TIG, allowing the welding method to be selected according to the design characteristics, material thickness and joint requirements.
As part of comprehensive production, parts are first manufactured using laser cutting, CNC punching and sheet metal bending. After welding, weld cleaning, surface preparation, powder coating and final product assembly can be carried out.
This approach allows welded structures and finished metal products to be manufactured within a single production cycle.
